Cake and Rainbows

Well I don’t know how it happened, but somehow an entire year has passed, and my little rainbow baby is officially ONE year old.

In one of my older posts I talked about what makes for a successful cake smash: a baby who has tried and likes cake, and a baby who doesn’t mind getting messy. If you happen to be friends with me on Facebook, or follow me on Instagram, you probably know that we do baby-led weaning with Spencer. (If you haven’t heard of this before, it basically just means we bypassed the pureed food stage and just give her everything we eat, cut down to appropriate sizes, and with some very limited restrictions.)

There are lots of benefits to feeding this way, and I’d definitely recommend doing some research on it if you have a baby almost ready to start solid foods! But an extra benefit which did not occur to me when starting, was that it made her the PERFECT cake smash candidate. She feeds herself with her hands at every meal, so she’s used to mess. (And oh does she make a good mess.) And since exploring food has been in her control since day one, she loves trying any and all types of food we put in front of her. And she likes literally everything. She hasn’t had much sugar prior to this but any small tastes we’ve offered her have been met with much enthusiasm, and a very loud and dramatic protest when it was all gone. Hopefully not a glimpse into our teenage years.

I was so excited to finally do my own baby’s cake smash! (I was not yet into photography when Stratton was this age.) I chose to go with my typical simplistic style, but of course, with a rainbow theme for my rainbow girl. This adorable outfit was custom-made by Lizzie Grace Boutique. The rainbow crown was made by Cutest Little Party. I was going to leave the background plain, but at the last minute I realized I had the perfect rainbow banner to match from Always Give a Craft. I didn’t realize until after that I was missing my green scraps from this banner; I had borrowed them for another banner and never put them back. Oops! And the star of the show, aside from miss Spencer of course, was the most amazing rainbow cake from My Dessert Designs. The colors were perfect, and her cakes are always delicious. We’ve been eating the leftover rainbow cake all week. Spencer enjoyed it just as much as I knew she would. Here are just a few of my favorites from her session!

Until next time, friends. Happy new year!
